What is a Notary?

Public Notaries are senior lawyers who prepare, authenticate, attest, witness and certify original and copy legal documents for use overseas.  They verify the validity of documents and the identity of a person signing a document under New Zealand laws as well as International law.  They provide a very specialised service to a very high international standard.

Foreign and Local documents

Documents which need to be used in another country, or overseas documents for use and to be signed for New Zealand for example powers of attorney, business contracts, medical documents, transfers of land, estate documents, court documents or simply providing certified copies of documents such as certificates of birth, death or marriage, degrees and qualifications will need the services of a Notary Public.

David Short was appointed a Notary Public in 1990 and provides this service.   He will advise you about the type of certification required and whether any other documents are needed.

Photographic Identification

Photographic identification by your passport or driver’s licence is essential for documents to be notarised.  As not all countries are signatories to the Hague Convention we are able to advise you of the likely requirements of any particular country.  You will need to provide evidence of your current address and give a contact telephone number.
